Non-concavity of the Dynamic Optimization of a Proprietary Two-sided Platform

چکیده
We formulate the dynamic of the platform size from aggregation of the best response dynamic of agents who have different exogenous cost to participate the platform, e.g. transportation costs. Then, concavity in the dynamic is no more thought as standard, because it means just concavity of the cumulative distribution function of the heterogeneous costs. We argue that non-concave (convex) one fits the reality when we think of a shopping center in a rural area as a two-sided platform. Although the non-concavity of the dynamic and the c.d.f does not imply that of the static optimization problem of the platform size and the static optimal platform size can be inferior even in the convex case, the dynamic optimization shows divergence of the platform size and the path can be non-monotonic. We relate two distinctive results from the concave case and the convex case with structural change in logistics of sellers in a shopping center. Further, we interpret the difference between the dynamic optimization and the static one as the the endogenous adjustment cost during disequilibrium process, proposing an “inertial entry game” which is a static approximation of the original dynamic entry game. Nonconcavity of the dynamic optimization means that of the static optimization in the inertia entry game.

Why is Platform Pricing Generally Highly Skewed?
Bolt and Tieman (2008) suggested that profit function non-concavities may account for the prevalence of skewed pricing by two-sided platform businesses. In the Rochet-Tirole (2003) model, however non-concavity is not necessary for highly skewed pricing. Ubiquitous high pass-through rates are sufficient but implausible. In the Armstrong (2006) model, non-concavity is neither necessary nor suffic...
متن کاملDesign Optimization and Construction of Double-Sided Linear Induction Motor
Linear induction motors have single and double-sided structures which are used in special applications, according to their advantages and disadvantages. Due to advantages such as lack of normal forces in double-sided type, these motors are more controllable and popular than the single-sided type, especially for transportation applications. In literature, single-sided linear induction motors ha...

Mobile robots that consist of a mobile platform with one or many manipulators mounted on it are of great interest in a number of applications. Combination of platform and manipulator causes robot operates in extended work space. The analysis of these systems includes kinematics redundancy that makes more complicated problem. However, it gives more feasibility to robotic systems because of the e...
متن کاملTwo-Sided Competition of Proprietary vs. Open Source Technology Platforms and the Implications for the Software Industry
T platforms, such as Microsoft Windows, are the hubs of technology industries. We develop a framework to characterize the optimal two-sided pricing strategy of a platform firm; that is, the pricing strategy toward the direct users of the platform as well as toward firms offering applications that are complementary to the platform. We compare industry structures based on a proprietary platform (...
متن کاملSimultaneous Multi-Skilled Worker Assignment and Mixed-Model Two-Sided Assembly Line Balancing
This paper addresses a multi-objective mathematical model for the mixed-model two-sided assembly line balancing and worker assignment with different skills. In this problem, the operation time of each task is dependent on the skill of the worker. The following objective functions are considered in the mathematical model: (1) minimizing the number of mated-stations (2), minimizing the number of ...
